Preparing for Lent

Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday for Catholics. We go to mass and receive ashes from blessed palm leaves on our foreheads. It is a reminder to us that "we are from dust and to dust we shall return." This a wonderful symbol that our earthly lives are temporary and our heavenly lives are forever. We spend the next forty days praying, fasting and sacrificing.

We refrain from eating meat on Friday's to remember the sacrifice of our Lord. Before the days of processed meats, people would kill their meat daily. The refrain from killing meal probably seemed more symbolic that just ordering fish instead of steak. We still do this because it is sacred tradition.

We also fast, which means two small meals and one large one on Ash Wednesday and fridays.

This year, we have decided to add daily mass to enrich our Lenten season. Holy Mass is the most beautiful prayer that a Catholic can participate in. We have prayers, readings from the Old and New Testament (Liturgy of the Word) and then celebrate the pascal sacrifice with the Holy Eucharist (Liturgy of the Eucharist). We also have liturgical music and more prayer throughout. It follows the pattern of the early Holy Fathers of the Church--truly what Christ wanted for us!

The boys also have Lenten calendars found on www.catholicicing.com. This is a great site for Catholic crafts.

God Bless!
